Frequently asked questions

Why choose Collingham?

Why choose us?

Our tutors – many Oxbridge-educated and over 80% holding postgraduate qualifications – combine academic excellence with a deep understanding of exam requirements. Students leave our courses with personalised revision notes, a clear summer study plan, and significantly improved exam technique. All groups are tailored to exam boards or, where relevant, specific texts and topics.

Small Groups, Big Impact

The average class at Collingham consists of just five students. A level groups never exceed eight, and GCSE groups are capped at nine. These small, focused sets allow tutors to deliver highly personalised teaching, while giving students the space to ask questions, participate actively, and grow in confidence through discussion.

This format enables any difficulties to be identified and addressed swiftly. Tutors work closely with students to ensure steady progress, shared purpose, and high standards—creating a learning environment where ambition is matched by support.

Individual tuition is also available where beneficial, allowing for even greater flexibility and personalisation.

A Focus on Exam Success

Across all courses, we place strong emphasis on exam technique and structured preparation.

We know that success in exams comes from more than just knowledge—it requires sustained effort, strategic revision, and a disciplined approach to study. Our methods equip students with the skills they need to perform at their best.

Independent Learning, Expert Feedback

Homework is set during the courses to consolidate classroom learning and foster independent thought. This is marked constructively, with feedback discussed thoroughly to promote improvement. Reports are sent to parents following the courses and include individualised advice to support the student’s ongoing revision.

Care and Flexibility

Every Collingham student is assigned a personal tutor who oversees their academic and personal development. The tutor offers encouragement and guidance, while also providing clear direction when needed. They stay in close contact with subject tutors and parents, ensuring that each student receives consistent, responsive support.

We monitor attendance closely, and parents are informed of absences or repeated lateness. Reports from both subject and personal tutors are issued twice a term, and regular Parents’ Evenings provide opportunities for in-depth discussion. Parents are also welcome to arrange individual meetings at any time.

Our timetable is designed to reflect both structure and flexibility. A level students are trusted to manage their free periods responsibly, with guidance from their tutors. If a student struggles to meet deadlines or keep pace, study periods can be added to offer additional support.

Supporting Every Student

Some students benefit from additional support, and we provide this with care and discretion. Study Skills sessions are built into our curriculum at both GCSE and A level, and can be tailored for students who need extra help developing focus, organisation, or revision techniques.

We have a dedicated dyslexia specialist on staff, and our EFL tutors offer targeted support for international students preparing for university-level study in English. Where personal challenges arise, we can advise students on accessing counselling or other wellbeing support.

What courses do you run and when?

What subjects do you offer revision courses in?

Our Easter Revision Courses cover a wide range of GCSE and A level subjects, with particular strength in high-demand exam subjects such as Mathematics, Sciences, English, Humanities and key A level options. All courses are taught by subject specialists with extensive experience of preparing students for public examinations.

Are these courses only for Year 11 and Year 13 students?

No. Students from Year 10 to Year 14 are welcome to attend our Easter revision and study skills courses.

Are GCSE and A level students taught together?

No. While students may be on the same site, courses themselves are age and level specific. The only exception is the Essential Examinations Skills course, which is designed to benefit students at all stages.

Course Structure and Format

How long is a course?

Courses typically run over four or five half days, depending on the subject and level. Some students attend a single subject course, while others combine several courses across the Easter period.

How long is each session?

Courses are delivered in half-day blocks, each lasting approximately 3½ hours:

  • Morning: 9.30am–1.00pm
  • Afternoon: 2.00pm–5.30pm

Teaching is broken into manageable sessions of around 90 minutes, with a break midway through the morning or afternoon to maintain concentration and energy.

What happens during a typical session?

Sessions are interactive and exam-focused and usually include:

  • Clear explanation of key topics
  • Worked examples and model answers
  • Guided practice questions
  • Examiner insight and common pitfalls
  • Time for questions and individual clarification

The emphasis is always on exam success, not simply content coverage.

How many courses can a student take?

Students may take as many courses as they feel will be beneficial, subject to timetable availability. Our team is happy to advise on a balanced and realistic programme.

Teaching Quality and Academic Value

What is the benefit of an in-person revision course compared with online learning or a tutor at home?

In-person courses provide a focused, structured academic environment away from everyday distractions. Students benefit from:

· Expert teachers with deep understanding of how exams are marked

· Interaction with peers, which boosts motivation and confidence

· Immediate feedback and rapid clarification of misconceptions

· Reduction of student screen time

· A pace and intensity that is difficult to replicate online or at home

Many students also find that working in a professional academic setting helps them engage more seriously with revision.

Are these courses suitable for high-achieving students as well as those who are struggling?

Yes. High-achieving students benefit from examiner insight, stretch and refinement of technique, while less confident students gain clarity, structure and reassurance.

Will attending a course guarantee better exam results?

No course can guarantee results. However, our Easter Revision Courses provide clearer understanding, stronger exam technique and focused preparation, all of which are key contributors to improved exam performance.

Subjects, Exam Boards and Specifications

How do you accommodate students from different schools studying different exam boards?

Our teachers are highly experienced with working with students from all backgrounds and types of school and all major exam boards. Courses focus on core concepts, skills and exam technique that apply across specifications, while addressing exam-board-specific requirements where relevant.

How do you manage teaching when students are studying different exam boards?

We run exam-board-specific courses wherever possible. Where multiple boards are present in one group, tutors provide clear, individualised guidance tailored to each student’s specification.

What about English, where students study different texts?

We focus on core skills, themes and exam technique applicable across English courses, alongside text-specific sessions that allow students to explore their own set texts in detail.

Are there any courses you don’t offer?

We do not offer courses for subjects that are wholly coursework-based, as these do not benefit meaningfully from short, intensive revision sessions.

Study Skills and Individual Support

What is covered in the full-day Essential Study Skills course?

This course develops transferable skills that improve performance across all subjects, including:

· How to revise effectively (not just for longer)

· Planning and structuring revision time

· Exam technique and time management

· Memory, recall and active learning strategies

· Managing exam pressure and building confidence

It is particularly valuable for students who work hard but feel they are not yet achieving their full potential.

How do you differentiate to meet different students’ needs?

All teachers have extensive experience supporting a wide range of learning needs. They adapt pace, examples and questioning to suit each group. Small class sizes allow us to stretch confident students, reinforce foundations where needed, and provide individual guidance throughout the course.

My child has SEND. How will you support them?

We have extensive experience supporting students with a wide range of SEND needs. Small class sizes, flexible teaching approaches and experienced staff allow us to provide appropriate adjustments and personalised support. We strongly encourage parents to share relevant information in advance.

Can we submit questions or topics in advance?

Yes. Parents and students are very welcome to submit questions or topics in advance, enabling teachers to address specific areas of concern during the course.

If my child needs help with something very specific, can this be requested?

Absolutely. While courses follow a planned structure, tutors are happy to prioritise particular topics or exam questions wherever possible, especially if requests are made in advance.  In some subjects it may also be possible to arrange additional 1:1 tuition to focus on specific requests.

Practical Information and Safeguarding

Where do the courses take place?

All Easter Revision Courses take place on site at Collingham Sixth Form in central London, in well-equipped classrooms designed to provide a calm, focused academic environment.

How do you ensure students’ safety and wellbeing?

Student safety and wellbeing are paramount. Courses are fully supervised by experienced staff and registers are taken. We provide a calm, respectful and supportive environment.

What is the minimum number of students required to run a course?

The minimum number is one. For very specific papers or topics, we will do all we can to provide tailored and targeted guidance. If a course runs with only one student, then the number of hours for that course is halved.

Reputation and Track Record

How many courses do you run at Easter?

We run multiple courses across a wide range of subjects and levels each Easter, with places intentionally limited to ensure quality teaching and individual attention.

How many courses did you run last Easter?

In 2025, we ran over 150 individual courses across GCSE and A level subjects.

Where do most students come from?

Students attend from a wide range of independent and state schools, both in London and further afield. While some are current Collingham students, a significant number are new to Collingham and attend specifically for our revision teaching.

What have students said about previous Easter Revision Courses?

Students consistently describe the courses as clear, focused and highly exam-relevant, confidence-boosting, and extremely helpful in identifying exactly what to revise next.
